What's being decided
Ministers are consulting on two possible timelines: ending terrestrial TV in 2034 or maintaining universal free-to-air television until 2044. A forced switch off in 2034 would have irreversible consequences for the nation. Even the Green Paper itself acknowledges that 2044 would be the ‘lower risk transition’.

Save Free TV is calling for 2044, backed by a fully costed, deliverable plan that gives the country time to get the transition right for everyone.

A 2034 switch-off risks cutting off millions of families who rely on terrestrial TV as their only way of watching, including many of the most vulnerable people in society.

This isn't about keeping every service forever. It's about making sure the switch-off date doesn't come before the country, and the people who rely on Freeview most, are ready.
